Founded in the autumn of 1989, Mid-Ulster Walking Club celebrated
its 20th anniversary recently with
Dinner at the Otter Lodge
in Cookstown.
Following its original format of
a Sunday walk every three weeks, the club has, over its twenty years ,
walked hill, mountain and coast throughout Northern
Ireland, from the Mournes to Donegal, Rathlin to Sligo as well as
enjoying annual spring and autumn trips to
destinations such as Connemara, Kerry, Snowdonia and the Scottish
Highlands.
Some members have ventured even further afield with trips organized by,
or within the club, to Europe, the Himalayas and South America.
United by their enthusiasm for walking, A variety of people of different
ages, backgrounds and personalities have donned their boots in the
company of the club.
Good times have been aplenty and many firm friendships,
even a marriage, have been formed over the course of many miles
tramped in fair weather and foul.
Walking is recognized for its
considerable benefits for both physical and mental well-being and the
club attempts to provide walks suitable for a range of abilities.
In recent years the club has added midweek
walks to its programme and 2009 saw a
successful and happy association with Cookstown District Council
in support of its Spring
and Autumn Walking Festivals.
New members are always sought
and warmly welcomed.
