Busy
Weekend for Walking Club
Late January brought an active weekend for the Mid-Ulster Walking Club as
it lent its support to the latest of Cookstown Council’s very successful
‘Sperrintrekkers’ Walking Festivals.
Well over sixty walkers set out on Saturday morning from just outside
Moneyneany, heading up Derrynoyd Lane as, first by road and then track,
they made the long climb up to their first top, Crockmore. It was a dry
day initially and the gain in height brought good views. The lonely
expanse of brown hills was impressive under a heavy mottling of snow. From
Crockmore they proceeded to Crockback and then to Craigbane. Here the
party split with some beginning their descent off the hills. Most pressed
on however for a stiff climb up to a misty Spelhoagh and Oughtmore (569
m), the highest point of the day. Finally descending they made their way
gradually down to Altbritain Forest, at the foot of which the bus and
refreshments awaited them.
Forty-seven walkers assembled on Sunday morning, a very creditable turnout
given an extremely poor weather forecast. Their walk began on the
Coolnasillagh Road, just off the Glenshane Pass. A track led them to the
top of Coolnasillagh Mountain before they continued west to climb
Bohilbreaga. Unusually for the ‘Sperrintrekkers’ this was an unforgiving
day, not cold but thoroughly wet and stubbornly misty. Perversely, spirits
among the walkers remained very high. Descending slightly they reached
Glendoo Burn and the waterfall on the edge of Glenshane Forest. The
planned stream-crossing was not possible, but, backtracking a little, they
found a path into the quiet of the trees and picked up the main track down
through the forest. Soon thereafter they came full-circle to their
starting-point, and, after a tough day, the waiting tea and coffee was
received with considerable enthusiasm.
